Friendly, clean, and colourful: the Kulturbras day-care centre is like an oasis in the middle of a favela in the Brazilian port of Fortaleza. Poverty and crime are the harsh realities of life on the streets of the neighbourhood. Around 100 disadvantaged children between the ages of three and thirteen come to the centre every day. New arrivals are often malnourished and lacking in hygiene, and many have difficulties with learning and social behaviour. At Kulturbras, they are given meals and care and taught how to brush their teeth, and they also receive lessons in reading, writing, and maths.
There is a kindergarten and a school with a literacy class. The children experience a sense of community and can play and laugh here without any worries.
