BENU bags made from recycled PET bottles instead of plastic bags

Around 400 BENU pharmacies in Serbia and Slovakia will offer their customers free carrier bags made from recycled PET bottles as an alternative to plastic bags during the month of June.  “We are committed to the protection of the environment and therefore continually look for improvements. The substitution of conventional plastic bags is a very good example” said Stefan Herfeld, member of the executive board of the PHOENIX group on the occasion of this year's World Environment Day on 5 June 2019. BENU is the core pharmacy brand of PHOENIX, a leading health care provider in Europe.

The worldwide consumption of plastic bags leads to severe environmental problems for the oceans, the climate and human beings. The topic also concerns pharmacies of the PHOENIX group and their customers. As part of World Environment Day, BENU customers in Serbia and Slovakia receive lightweight, environmentally friendly shopping bags made from recycled PET bottles throughout June for purchases above a certain value. For the production of such a bag, four to five used PET bottles are recycled and given a second life. The aim of this campaign is to encourage customers to use these bags more often and thus conserve natural resources. The modern design of the bag contributes to this. With around 150 million patient contacts per year, PHOENIX sees an opportunity to call for rethinking in favor of less plastic consumption.

The aim of World Environment Day is to raise awareness that it is above all humankind itself that threatens the diversity and stability of the environment. On this day, various events, actions and measures promote global ecological courage. Around 150 countries worldwide are taking part in this World Environment Day – including PHOENIX.
