The PHOENIX group has set an official target to become CO2 -neutral in its own business operations by the year 2030. The company wants to avoid and reduce its emissions by at least 30 per cent (Scope 1 + 2 emissions). PHOENIX thereby underlines its commitment to creating added value for society and the environment beyond its mission in the healthcare sector.

Leon Jankelevitsh, Member of the Executive Board Healthcare Logistics & Sustainable Supply Chain says: “As part of society and as the leading healthcare provider in Europe, it is our duty to contribute to greater climate protection and help especially in minimising the health risks related to rising temperatures”, adding: “We are convinced that the economic success of our company is inseparably linked with social and environmental responsibility. The expectations of our customers, employees and investors are growing – as are regulatory requirements.”

The main emission sources of PHOENIX group’s business operations are electricity consumption, followed by diesel vehicles and the use of natural gas. PHOENIX primarily intends to achieve emission reduction through energy efficiency measures, change of energy sources (e.g., switch from diesel to electric vehicles), purchase of green electricity as well as own production of energy by solar panels. In these efforts, the company is guided by the “Science Based Targets initiative”, which drives ambitious climate action in the private sector by enabling organisations to set science-based emission reduction targets. Besides the actual emission reduction, PHOENIX will compensate for the remaining amount of CO2 by supporting selected high quality mitigation projects for carbon credit from 2030 onwards. In addition to focusing on emissions in PHOENIX’ own business unit, the healthcare provider is working in parallel to optimise data collection for its emissions along the supply chain (Scope 3 emissions).

The company had recently launched a sustainability agenda addressing five major areas: climate action, circular economy, responsible supply chains, diversity, and equal opportunities, as well as community engagement. To advance the agenda further, PHOENIX has been focusing on the development of a climate strategy in the course of the last months.
