The PHOENIX group is celebrating the company’s 20th anniversary today. In 1994, Adolf Merckle founded PHOENIX Pharmahandel Aktiengesellschaft & Co from the German regional wholesalers F. Reichelt AG in Hamburg, Otto Stumpf GmbH in Berlin, Ferdinand Schulze GmbH & Co. in Mannheim, Otto Stumpf AG in Nuremberg, and Hageda AG in Cologne.
From the outset, the newly established company was the market leader in the German domestic market – and still is to this day. The PHOENIX group is therefore taking the anniversary as an opportunity to change the name of its headquarters to Adolf-Merckle-Haus in honour of the outstanding achievements of the entrepreneur and founder Adolf Merckle.
From its offices in Mannheim, the PHOENIX group has developed into a leading pharmaceutical trader in Europe and one of the top 30 companies in Germany over the last two decades – and now has more than 28,500 committed employees as well as a total operating performance of over EUR 25 billion. What began in 1994 with the wholesale business in Germany, France, the Czech Republic, Austria, and Poland, today covers a broad range of healthcare services in 25 European countries, including the pharmacy retail business in 12 countries.
Oliver Windholz, CEO of the PHOENIX group, said in his celebratory speech: “Our more than 20 years of history shows how dynamically PHOENIX has developed into a leading pharmaceutical trader throughout almost all of Europe. With 152 wholesale and pre-wholesale distribution centres, as well as over 1,600 pharmacies, we offer our customers a unique geographical coverage across Europe. Our vision is to be the best integrated healthcare provider – wherever we are.”
The PHOENIX group provides each customer group with the best possible services and products along the entire pharmaceutical supply chain. Pharmaceutical manufacturers, pharmacies, doctors, hospitals, health insurance funds, and patients alike can benefit from the comprehensive service offering. PHOENIX achieves this by focusing on integrated structures between our Wholesale, Retail, and Pharma Services segments and is therefore the optimal link between pharmaceutical manufacturer and patient.
